Time flies! Van maandag tot en met donderdag ben ik druk met de jongens en 's avonds spreek ik vaak met Chrissy af. Een Duitse au pair die net als ik een pedagogische achtergrond heeft afgerond. Nieuw-Zeeland, Wellington en Petone voelen inmiddels als een thuis. Ik vind het eng om voor te stellen dat we in Nederland aan de andere kant van de weg rijden en naast dat ik de eerste accenten begin over te nemen (oeps) hoor ik vanaf de achterbank steeds

vaker 'Sweet as bro'...kijken hoelang het duurt voordat ik die overneem.

Elk weekend staat er wel een (korte) roadtrip op de planning. Dé momenten om alle jaloersmakende foto's te maken. Van de spanning over de slaapplekken waar we belanden tot karaoke in de auto en goede gesprekken. Roadtrips staan gelijk aan lachbuien en de garantie om onbeschrijfelijk mooie plekken te zien Enjoy the little things in life

De eerste roadtrip was tijdens het weekend van Queensbirthday. Koningsdag maar dan zonder feestjes. Op vrijdag haalde ik onze huurauto op voordat ik Jitka (NL) en Tia (D), twee andere au pairs die ik alleen via whatsapp had gesproken, kon ophalen. Na 350 km rijden kwamen we savonds laat aan in Napier, afstanden zijn allemaal relatief haha. Dat weekend zijn we onder andere naar een chocolade fabriek, de foodmarket van Hastings, Cape Kidnappers en een winery estate (het gebied staat bekend om zijn wijn) geweest. In Napier heb ik bij kunnnen kletsen met Nicole, mijn orientatiebuddy. Zij bleek heel toevallig met twee andere meiden vanuit Auckland in precies hetzelfde weekend naar Napier te rijden. Het (letterlijke) hoogtepunt van dat weekend was de Te Mata peak. Bijna een uur heb ik uitgekeken op Lord of the Rings achtige heuvels aan de ene kant en de zee aan de andere. Tijdens de lange trip terug naar huis zijn we ook nog even langs de plaats met de langste plaatsnaam ter wereld gereden. Who want's to give it a shot?!

Mijn tweede 'roadtrip' stond gepland voor mijn verjaardagsweekend! Op vrijdag ben ik met Lieke, een Nederlandse au pair uit Zeewolde (toeval bestaat niet), naar Turangi gereden. Een plaats 4,5 uur rijden van Wellington, aan het Taupo meer. Haar hostfamily heeft hier een vakantiehuisje en ze waren zo aardig dat ik daar ook mocht overnachten. Na een blik op het weerbericht geworpen te hebben, besloten we spontaan om zaterdag te gaan raften op de Tongariro river. Dan maakte het ook niet uit als het zou regenen. Aangezien het hier winter is (en we soms echt wel koude dagen hebben, lees 4 graden) gingen we dik ingepakt op pad. Zwemkleding, twee fleecetruien, wetsuit, handschoenen, schoenen, muts, helm en zwemvest. De michelinmannetjes, of meisjes, waren er klaar voor! In 2,5 uur hebben we ongeveer 13 km afgelegd met 63 'rapids'. en zijn we van een rots afgesprongen. Dit was het moment dat ik merkte dat de temperatuur van het water toch echt wel tegen het vriespunt aan lag....maar het was zo gaaf om te doen!
Om ons van onderkoeling weg te houden, kregen we onderweg warme chocolademelk en werden we na afloop afgezet bij de hot springs. Hierna begon de lange reis naar huis, aangezien ik voor mijn verjaardag thuis wilde zijn.

Op zondag moest ik eraan geloven, ik was echt 24...Toch wel gek om je verjaardag ergens anders te vieren. Het was in ieder geval mijn langste verjaardag ooit en eentje die ik zeker niet ga vergeten. 'sOchtends heb ik met een live skypeverbinding mijn cadeautjes geopend die ik in mei al had meegenomen in mijn koffer. Ondertussen had ik al een filmpje gekregen waarin Kaius mij toezingt. We hadden afgesproken samen te ontbijten en eenmaal beneden werd ik overladen met zo veel cadeautjes. Echt super lief! Na het ontbijt was het tijd om een extra cadeautje op te halen: LUNA! Sinds zondag hebben we er een huisgenootje bij, puppy van 12 weken. Een derde kind erbij, maar eentje waar ik lastig nee tegen kon zeggen. Ze is zoo lief! Met gepaste trots even een klein detail; ze heette eigenlijk Pookie. Ik vroeg of ze hier ook hondennamen hadden die eigenlijk elke hond heeft, zoals Luna of Diesel in NL. Toen was mijn hostmom verkocht, geen naam kon meer tegen Luna op. En hier komt hij amper voor dus dat scheelt.
Smiddags kwam Chrissy mij ophalen. 25 juni is hier eigenlijk hetzelfde als 25 december in NL, dus het weer valt ook te vergelijken....niet heel bijzonder. We zijn voor een korte roadtrip langs de baai gaan rijden, en hebben uiteindelijk in de auto gepicknickt. En super lief, Chrissy had een cupcake met kaarsjes voor mij klaargezet. Ze had ook nog een supertof cadeautje: een pak Hagelslag! Hallooo Alpen van chocoladehagel op mijn brood.Ze had zelf een Nederlandse verjaardagskaart met Nederlandse felicitatie. De plaats waar ik zit, Petone, is vooral bij de Nederlandse au pairs bekend vanwege de Dutch Shop die hier zit. Van hagelslag en kaas tot pannekoekenmixen en Nederlandse snoepjes. Bijna alles is hier te vinden. Chrissy bleef savons bij mijn gezin eten en als toetje had ik een échte Nederlandse appeltaart gemaakt :) Op dinsdag werd ik nog een keer door het hele bejaardentehuis toegezongen. Een verjaardag die ik in ieder geval lang zal blijven onthouden. Small things become great when done with love

In de andere weekenden heb ik met andere au pairs korte tripjes gemaakt. Zo ben ik met Chrissy en drie andere Duitse au pairs (Mailin, Maya en Lea) naar de Red Rocks geweest. Dit is een wandelroute net buiten Wellington met een eigen seal colony (zeeleeuwen) geweest. Vooral door de stank weet je dat je hen bereikt hebt, en dan kan je gaan zoeken! Ongeveer 95% van de au pairs is Duitse, dus tegen de tijd dat ik terugkom is naast mijn Engels ook mijn Duits vloeiend. De meeste weten inmiddels dat ik hen prima verstaan dus vinden ze het makkelijker om onderling Duits te praten. Zelf blijf ik gezellig in het Engels terug kletsen. Chrissy en ik gooien er af en toe ook een beetje Nederlands tussen door. Gewoon voor de afwisseling.

Chrissy, Lieke en ik zijn samen ook een dagje richting Castle point gereden. Als een stel berggeitjes zijn Lieke en ik naar de top van een heuvel gelopen. Een tocht van 1 uur en 40 minuten, maar binnen 20 minuten stonden we boven. Om er uiteindelijk alsnog bijna 2 uur over te doen door alle fotos die we op de top maakten.
Dit weekend ben ik heerlijk in Wellington, aangezien mijn hostgezin een paar dagen in Auckland is. Ik had wel een puppy die hier rondhobbelde, en dat is een fulltime job opzich, maar de broer van Josh heeft aangeboden om haar een nachtje te houden. Heel chill! Hallo pyamadagen :)

Ondanks dat ik zulke toffe en mooie avonturen beleef, mis ik jullie allemaal (maar voornamelijk de zomer) wel een beetje hoor. But...when you stop and look around, this life is pretty amazing. Find the beauty in everyday!

Time flies! From Monday till Thursday I am busy with the boys and in the evenings I usually meet up with Chrissy. A German au pair who has an educational background, just like me. New Zealand, Wellington and Petone feel like home. I find it crazy and scary to imagine that I was used to driving on the other side of the road and besides the fact that I’m spotting the first New Zealand accent (oops), I usually get approval for my actions from the backseat of the car: ‘Sweet as bro’…let’s see how long it takes before I start using that as well!

Almost every weekend someone will schedule a (small) roadtrip.

These are the moments I take astonishing pictures to make everyone jealous haha. From the adrenaline rush about our next sleeping spot to karaoke in the car and good conversations. Roadtrips equal lots of laughing and the guaranty of ending up in unbelievably amazing places! Enjoy the little things in life

The first roadtrip was during the Queensbirthday’ weekend. Kingsday (Dutch public holiday) but without the parties. On Friday I picked up our rental car before picking up Jitka (NL) and Tia (D), two other au pairs I had only met on whatsapp before. After a trip of 350 km we arrived late at night in Napier. Distance is always relative haha. During the weekend we went to a chocolate factory, the foodmarket in Hastings, Cape Kidnappers and a winery estate. The area is famous of it’s wine. In Napier I had time to meet up with my orientation buddy, Nicole. She happened to travel to Napier with two friends as well, but they came down from Auckland. The highlight of the trip, literally, was the Te Mata peak. For a hour, I’ve been staring at Lord of the Rings-like hills on one side and the sea on the other side. On the long way home, we drove past the place with the longest place name in the world. Who want’s to give it a shot?!

My second roadtrip was during my birthday’s weekend. On Friday I drove with Lieke, another Dutch au pair, to Turangi. A town 4.5 hours drive from Wellington, on the Taupo lake. Her hostfamily has a holiday home over here and they were so kind to letting me stay there with them. After looking at the weatherforecast, we spontaneously decided to go to do some white water rafting on the Tongariro river. Since it’s winter (and we actually do have really cold days) we put lots of layers of clothes on. Ready? Let’s go: swimsuit, two fleecejackets, wetsuit, gloves, shoes, beanie, helmet and lifevest. In 2.5 hours we travelled 13 km with 63 rapids and we jumped off a rock. Believe me, it was pretty freezing…but AWESOME! To prevent us from hypothermia, they gave us hot chocolate during the tour and at the end they dropped us off at the hot springs. Then, we had to start to make our way back home, since I wanted to be in Petone for my birthday. And my first present: a beautiful view on the three volcanoes: Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu.

On Sunday I had my longest birthday ever. And I’ll definitely won’t forget it. After setting up a skypeconnection with my family, I opened up all the cards they send me and the presents I already took with me in my suitcase. In the meantime, I got the sweetest movie ever from Kaius, where he say ‘Happy Birthday’ for me. After getting loads of amazing presents and a family birthdaybreakfast somewhere in a real kiwi-restaurant on the other side of Wellington it was time to pick up our newest family member: Luna! A 12 weeks old puppy. A third child but how can someone say no to a puppy?! In the afternoon, Chrissy came to pick me up for a picnic. June 25th here is the same as December 25th on the Northern hemisphere, so is the weather. So…a picnic in the car. With a cupcake, candles and best of all: HAGELSLAG, a Dutch treat for on your bread. She even got me a Dutch birthday card and with some help of a Dutch friend she even wrote the brithday wishes in Dutch. Soo sweet! She got the hagelslag from the Dutch store in Petone, this shop is one of the reasons all the Dutch au pairs know the place. You can literally buy anything Dutch here, from hagelslag and cheese till pancake mixes and Dutch candies. Chrissy stayed for dinner and I made Dutch apple pie as a desert. On Tuesday, the whole group at the elderly home sang ‘Happy birthday’ for me. A birthday to remember! Small things become great when done with love

Besides the long roadtrips I have made some daytrips during the weekends with other au pairs. Together with Chrissy and three other German au pairs (Mailin, Maya and Lea) I went to the Red Rocks, a walk just outside Wellington with it’s own seal colony. Approximately 95% of the au pairs is German. So, by the time I will be home I will not only be a fluent English speaker but my German language skills will be improved as well! Most German au pairs know that I can understand what they are saying, so when I’m the only non-German they will talk German. I however, strong-willed as I am ahum, keep answering in English. Chrissy and I like to mix everything up a little bit to keep it exciting, so sometimes I’ll add some Dutch words as well.
Another day, Chrissy, Lieke and I drove up to Castlepoint, As if we were two experienced mountain climbers, Lieke and I almost ran up to the top of the hill for a nice lookout point. A walk which was supposed to take 1 hour and 40 minutes but within 20 minutes we reached the top. In the end, it still took us almost 2 hours before we had returned since we made so many pictures. Can I please have one more?
This weekend, Im just hanging out in Wellington since my hostfamily is on a short trip to Auckland. I did have a puppy running around, which is a fulltime job on it’s own, but Josh’ brother offered to keep her over the night :)
Beside my awesome and amazing adventures, I do miss the summer and my friends. But...when you stop and look around, this life is pretty amazing. Find the beauty in everyday!
