Today we finished our Amsterdam tour by taking a canal tour. We took the train in from Lisserbroek to the Amsterdam main station. It is a huge place. The train system is so efficient and the preferred method to get around (other than the bicycle).
We hopped on the boat tour and floated past many of the sites we had seen by bus. But a different perspective. There are 2500 houseboats that live on the canals. Each has its own water, sewer, and electrical hookups. No new permits will be issued making them quite valuable. In the past, the canals were very polluted but they have now figured out how to keep them clean.
It is amazing how many bicycles you see in Amsterdam. They are everywhere and there are bicycle parking garages that would compete with our car parks. Those not in lots are chained to every railing available and every bridge over the canals is covered in them.
We went into the central area of Amsterdam after the tour and had some of the best ice cream. Ice cream mixed with whipped cream. Geoff’s new favourite. The temperature was about 2.5 c and yet there was a line up for the ice cream. Pretty sure you wouldn’t see that in Canada.
Had a great dinner at a Greek restaurant in Lisse.
