New England in the Fall - 2015

It took us awhile, but with the help of a very nice gentleman we found the "Freedom Trail" tour.

Picture on the left is our tour guide. She was very interesting and humorous. Picture on the right is one of their government buildings, I think...again think sleep deprivation.

It took us awhile, but with the help of a very nice gentleman we found the "Freedom Trail" tour.

This is the famous Granbury Cemetery where a lot of our founding fathers are buried. The obelisk in the middle is a tribute to Benjamin Franklin who was born and raised in Boston. His parents are buried here, but Ben rests in Philadelphia. John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and many others rest here in this cemetery though.

The picture on the next page that looks like an above ground tomb is actually the entrance into an underground crypt. If you remove the lid there is a staircase that takes you down underground into the crypt where the deceased abide. There were quite a few of these scattered throughout the cemetery. Some held single individuals and some held all or part of a family group. Can we say CREEPY!

The top left picture is the really tall grave marker of John Hancock. Hancock was a really rich dude. He inherited 40 million when he was a young man (I forget the details) but he was a great guy and well liked. As relations deteriorated between England and the colonies it became apparent that they would need to go to war with England and they would need an army. They would also need a Commander of the Continental Army. Hancock wanted the job, but George Washington was chosen. John was a sore loser and he knew how to hold a grudge. No love was lost between the two. But then we won the war and we needed a President! Well John Hancock knew just the man, yep, himself. But again Washington beat him out. Things got even nastier after that.

The top right picture is that of Paul Revere's headstone.

The bottom left picture is the grave marker of Samuel Adams.
And the bottom right picture is of one of those doorways to the underworld (shiver) that I wrote about on the previous page. (Where's an emoticon when you need one?) At this point the battery on Lee's phone went dead and that was the end of our picture taking. The tour was lots of fun and very interesting. However, I would strongly advise that you do not do the Fenway Park and the Freedom Trail tours on the same day. Especially after spending all night on a plane :(
