The Sistine Chapel is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and most well known works by Michelangelo. The style in which it was painted was one of the first major uses of the realistic body form within the medium of painting. It features various biblical stories and people, as well as pictures of Roman gods and goddesses. The back wall portrays a scene of the Revelation, as it shows some people ascending to heaven and some people descending into hell. While today the Sistine Chapel painting is world-renowned, there was not always a positive consensus. A later Pope, a more conservative leader, had much of the painting’s nudity blacked out of the work of art. It was a time of more reserved ideals, and such nudity in the church was seen as unacceptable and unholy. I believe that this shows Rome’s, as well as the Catholic Church’s, inconsistency over the years. Rather than progressing in their ideas, they reverted back to a more conservative time. This is a perfect representation of how Rome’s values transitioned over the years. Yet today, the Sistine Chapel is used by the Cardinals when they vote for a new Papal leader. Clearly, the Sistine Chapel has gone through many different periods of thought.
