Rome has long been called “The City of Seven Hills.” These hills were integral in the settlement and culture of Rome. Each hill had its own purpose and position. Remus famously settled upon the Aventine Hill, while Romulus settled upon Palatine Hill; Capitoline Hill was the center for government; the Caelian Hill and Esquiline Hill were a space for the elite; and the Viminal Hill was a fortress. However, it is easy to see that these hills caused some separation between the people of Rome. Each hill had its own purpose, but the seven hills were disconnected from one another. Today, as most of the hills are either residential areas or filled with great buildings and monuments, the separation is minimal. But at that time, the hills somewhat divided the city. Some hills were meant for the elite, while others were meant for common people. A community cannot truly thrive if its classes are separated in this way. While the Seven Hills were the beginning of Rome, I have to wonder if a more connected settlement would have produced a more coherent society.
