France: Brittany and Normandy 2018

After leaving the airport our goal was to visit Chartres. Armed with Jim’s cellular iPad equipped with a French SIM card installed, we were able to escape the craziness of the airport and the Paris roads. We were starving and needed rest so we stopped at a gas/food rest stop. Inside there was a great fast food place called Brioche Dorée. We had marvelous coffee and sandwiches (which started our eating mania through France). We stayed there for over an hour resting both physically and mentally. We continued our drive to Chartres to visit the famous Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres). After an hour and half of driving a massive church rose up from the surrounding flat planes. It could be seen from miles away. The Cathedral is the oldest and most beautiful church in France. Its stained glass windows are world famous for its blue stain glass that cannot be replicated not even with today's technology. We had trouble parking at Chartres because we couldn’t figure out how the parking machines worked, even with our nifty French-to-English scanner on our iPhones (which was no aid here). I asked several people if they could help, finally, a women pushing a baby stroller helped us, she was marvelous. She didn’t think her English was good; are you kidding me! Her English was far above my poor French. Yolande, had told us that most French know English but are afraid they do not speak it well enough. After 20 min spent with the parking fiasco we wound our way up at least 300 stairs to the Cathedral that sets on the top the highest hill in the area, it was amazing, both outside and inside. We took way too many pictures. When leaving the town of Chartres we found the roads very narrow and confusing. What should have been a 10 min drive out of town took us about 30 minutes. Finally, we escaped Chartres and drove another hour and half to our hotel for the night. It was a little country Inn within the tiny 3 block village of Chevillé. I had booked this hotel before leaving the states because it was half way between Yolande’s house and Orly airport (a 6 hour drive). The hotel was clean and neat and very cute. Our rooms on this trip were alway on the upper floors with no lifts. We had to drag our bags up 3 floors, Jim with his 50 lb bag (thank goodness, I had talked him out of bring his 8 lbs tripod). We had a great dinner at the only restaurant in town, De La Place, right next to our hotel (the only other business in town). We returned to our room and watched our favorite Netflix show 'Heart Land' on Jim’s iPad (in English) Ahh!
