Sarria, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands

We left earlier than usual this morning as we planned on arriving at Samos in time for the 10:30 am tour of the 6th century Benedictine monastery. We arrived at Samos early enough to have a café break and made our way to the monastery. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by Saint Martin Dumiense, a Hungarian born monk who traveled to Galicia. He spent several years converting the local population to Roman Catholicism. For this he was canonized. Over the years, the monastery changed hands several times, became rich enough to own over hundreds of other monasteries, churches and towns. It was so wealthy, it became a target for marauders in the early middle ages. The power, strength and influence of the monastery is evident in the structure even today. We had a guided tour of some sections of the monastery. However, it was in Spanish and we tried to follow as best as we could. It's definitely worth a visit for its history, architecture and sheer majesty! After our tour of the monastery, we had lunch at one of the cafes nearby and continued on to Sarria. We arrived in Sarria late afternoon and made our way to Hotel Mar De Plata. It was conveniently located, clean and bright. After the usual shower and rest, we went to the old part of Sarria to visit the 13th century church and castle tower and to find something to eat. We came across this welcoming, authentic Italian restaurant – 'Matias Locanda Italiana’. A family owned restaurant that serves fresh food. The place has interesting artwork from travellers across the world. We had the caprese salad, a great bottle of wine, pasta and dessert! One of the best meals we had during our camino trip! During and after our meal, we met with fellow pilgrims and no one was particularly looking forward to the end of the camino walk – we had only 4 more days left! We walked back to our hotel with our fellow caminos. On our way back, we planned to meet for dinner the next day at Portomarin.
