Marissa Baietto Immigration Diary

Dear Diary,
Last night I landed in America! The flight felt much longer due to my nerves, and I couldn’t tell whether it was because I was excited to finally see what America is like, or that it won’t be as magnificent as I hoped. The flight took off in the morning, so I was half asleep when boarding. Over the course of the flight, I imagined what America will look like. When the flight landed, I looked at the huge airport. Its name was O’hare, and there were so many businesses taking off and landing. When I went to the baggage claim, I could see Scott holding up a huge sign with my name on it! I went up to him, and he helped me get my luggage and helped me get in the car.
As we drove, I couldn’t believe how many people went to the airport, there were cars everywhere! The roads were packed, and there were lit up buildings everywhere! Scott asked me about my flight and told me how excited he was to show me where he lives. When he described it, I imagined a huge city with people everywhere. It turns out that McHenry is not as big, and the houses are very spread out compared to England.
When we got to Scott’s house, I met his dog, who was very territorial. Before I came over, Scott told me that he was going to make sure that I knew that Scott was in the first command, him in second and that I was the lowest. When he told me that the dog was going to get up close to me, I didn’t expect the dog to be right in my face! I was told not to look him in the eye, and to stay still. It was hard, but finally, the dog left me alone and walked away.
For dinner, Scott told me that he was going to get takeout Chinese food. He said that the restaurant was just “around the block” and it wouldn’t take long. I thought that meant that like in England, it was actually within walking distance. When he was out for thirty minutes, I thought he got in an accident and started to panic. When he came home, he told me that it was an expression, and laughed.
I’m already so happy to be in America.
