My diary

Sunday we drove from Lake Louise to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway. We stopped and hiked up to Peyto Lake, passed the Columbia Icefield, and viewed waterfalls along the valley. We finished with a hike up to Mt. Edith Cavell and a beautiful view of a glacial lake with icebergs on it. We ended the day by driving to our hotel in Jasper at the Fairmont Jasper National Park Inn.

Peyto Lake trail was closing the next day so we made sure to take in this beautiful hike on Sunday. The initial view area was pretty crowded, but we hiked on further to a second viewpoint where the pictures of Ann and I were taken and the spot was quiet and even more beautiful

Next we drove to the Sunwapta Falls which is a short walk from the parking lot. The falls is where the river breaks through a narrow crack in the rock to shoot through with lots of churning and turbulence. Right picture is a close up of the entrance to the falls. The next page shows a view of the narrow canyon the river cut through the rock below the falls

We stopped at one final waterfall along the Icefields Highway, Athabasca Falls, which is shown on the next few pages. The final picture shows the river after the falls heading past the escarpment that produced the falls, with the layering of the hard sedimentary rock clearly visible.
