As cliché as it is, I have always been the most intrigued by Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa painting. I was very disappointed at the viewing experience. I had always imagined being able to stand close to the painting and having a full viewing experience. I was disappointed to find there was much more distance between me and the painting than I had hoped for. Schaefer defines intellectual content as “the worldview or perspective expressed in the art by the artist.” For me, that is the most important facet of consideration when viewing this painting. As a child, I would put myself in the place of the woman in the painting and try to imagine how she felt. The truth is, the woman the painting is very universal. The meaning and intent of the artist was specific to that time period, yet the story of Mona Lisa stands to be interpreted by every single viewer that has the opportunity of encountering her.
