Naturally, Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork is a main attraction of Musee d’Orsay. I have never seen any of his art in person so I was really excited to see his exhibition. My favorite painting at Musee d’Orsay was La Nuit étoilée by Vincent Van Gogh. This is not to be confused with the the Starry Night that is housed in New York City. The painting at Musee d'Orsay is a different version more commonly known as, Starry Night Over the Rhone.
Interestingly, the Musee d’Orsay website notes that the NYC Starry Night was made by Van Gogh a few months after being in a mental institution. In that version, his trouble mind was fully expressed through trees shaped like flames and swirls representing the sky and stars. In contrast, Starry Night Over the Rhone reflects serenity and peace.
I think that I was drawn to Starry Night Over the Rhone because I love nighttime, the stars, and blue hues. All these things really convey a sense of peace to me and the way Van Gogh painted the night brings out such beauty. I am more of a night person, it’s often when I feel the most inspired, I’m the most productive, and when I have the sweetest alone times with Jesus. For me, there is just something special to be found at night. It appears Van Gogh would agree with me as well. In a letter to his sister, Van Gogh said, “Often it seems to me night is even more richly colored than day.”
