The trip from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher was by road.
Possible stops:
* Birr Castle and the Demense gardens. It is heavenly. photographic museum along with a giant telescope. many camera opportunities.
* Only 12 km from Birr, Kinnity Castle does a nice lunch in the historic library lounge by a cosy fire.
* Athlone - pass through Wicklow Mountains National Park

Our first main town was Athlone. Set on the banks of the Shannon, the bustling town of Athlone is a magnet for river traffic and visitors. The Shannon splits this former garrison town in two, with most businesses and services sitting on its eastern bank. In the shadow of Athlone Castle, the western bank is an enchanting jumble of twisting streets, colourfully painted houses, historic pubs and antique shops. We stopped here for a walk around the town.

Then off to the Cliffs of Moher where we stayed nearby for the night at the Lahinch Golf and Leisure Centre. We stayed here to take the opportunity of seeing the cliffs at sunset. We detoured first to the Cliffs of Moher. Step on to the edge of the world and into an awe-inspiring view that dreams are made of – at the Cliffs of Moher you will encounter nature in its wildest, purest form – see the rugged cliffs facing the mighty ocean, taste the salt air, hear the birds cry, feel the ancient rocks beneath your feet, smell the wind. This is a most spectacular natural wonder at the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way – the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience. The best time to see the Cliffs is sunset.

Then it was on to Limerick which has a rich history and strong heritage, which remains ever present in its structures, its streets and its people. County Limerick was created in the 1250s and has many fine medieval monuments including magnificent castles and abbeys.
