Moto Sur - Our Grand Adventure

“We are not quite in the belly of the beast…..but we are definitely somewhere down the throat.” (that’s a Bruce quote). I’m not sure if Bruce is referring to Central or South America as the “belly”, but regardless, it's been a great trip so far. We are just north of Puerto Vallarta tonight.
No bandito sightings yet and not even any potholes of any size (which we believe is the larger practical threat). Bruce says, “Seems like NAFTA is working”. Our only near death situation was when the toll booth security gate came down on Bruce’s helmet and almost knocked him out! Haven’t ventured off pavement yet and won’t likely do so till South America.
Roads have been much higher quality than we expected although there is a lot of constant construction. If anything gets us, it will be playing the passing game on the windy roads. Bruce got very “over focused” today trying to follow the pizza panel truck guy through the Sierra Madre curvy roads….passing trucks going 80 mph. It was like an intense reality video game …… and in the end, the pizza guy won. In fact, Bruce can’t quit talking about the amazing pizza panel truck driver tonight at dinner!
Couchsurfing.com has been sweet so far. One night in Hermosillo where Luis “ubered” us to all the hotspots in town which we never would have found on our own. Then two nights in Mazatlán with Lee where we enjoyed our own casita adjacent to the beach. We will definitely keep looking for couchsurfing opportunities. Who would’ve thought that “dirt bagging” would be so cool. We have a host lined up for tomorrow night in Manzanillo and the next night in Acapulco. The graciousness of people to travelers is so heartening!
Every day we have Mexicans (and sometimes US citizens) approaching us with friendly curiosity about our bikes and where we are coming from and where we are going. We will never get where we are going if we keep talking to everyone! The friendliness and curiosity is special.
Dumped my bike twice so far and its only day 6. Once in Cory and Jen’s driveway in Arizona and the second time today…..at a toll booth. Stopped at the booth, put my foot down to hold my bike and wham…..down I went because I put my foot into a pool of grease on the road. It’s a great way to get the attention of a bunch of Mexican guys!
Stay tuned in……

We took off a day to do a side trip from Mazatlan to the mountain town of Durango. Durango-Mazatlán Highway is one of Mexico’s greatest engineering feats, with 115 bridges and 61 tunnels. Gorgeous riding!

The fourth picture is the malecon in Mazatlan. Our couchsurfing host rode his moto to the malecon with us to get manta ray soup for breakfast. It was delicious!
