We are off on our adventure to Latin America in two weeks’ time. Riding motorcycles to South America. There is something about intentionally pursuing an activity like this that excites the soul and stimulates a desire to pursue life. This is not my first undertaking of an adventurous nature but is maybe one of the last opportunities I have to do something of this magnitude. Aging is not a bad thing, it is just a fact of life. Yet, it does have a tendency to begin to reduce options. So, here we go, attempting to extend that part of our youthful spirt for a bit longer.
At the beginning of any adventure one feels a multitude of expectations, desires and concerns. Though I must admit, age is truly a calming and beneficial factor in this regard. The older, the wiser. It also helps knowing that I have more material resources and experience in my quiver then when I was a young man with more piss and vinegar than money and knowledge. There are tradeoffs in life and I like to assume I am making the best of them.
Some may think this is a fool’s choice. Some, a wonderful chance to elevate the breadth of one’s life. I think it is a necessity to keep me going longer and hopefully stronger. I also love riding motorcycles! It has a little of the excitement of climbing, kayaking and wilderness travel and about as much of the scenic beauty. So, I am excited. A little intimidated and unsure of myself, we have only ridden motorcycles for a year and I have never been much of a mechanic and my Spanish is almost non-existent. However, I am sure my abilities in both will improve rapido.
