AUSTRALIA

We drove due east of Perth to an old town called Mundaring. It has a reservoir and a famous weir, and from here a huge pipeline takes water to the old gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. A big steam powered pump was built initially, now part of a museum. The Victorian design of the buildings is typical despite it being functional in use. The idea for the pipeline came from someone called CY O'Connor but he was laughed at about it and ended up riding his horse into the sea and killing himself. Eventually the idea was taken seriously and it took 5 years to build. We were at a famous old hotel and it was full of parrots. We saw wild kangaroo for the first time!
