The Colosseo also known as the Flavian Ampitheater after the dynasty of emperors that constructed it. It is a concrete building that was made to hold around 50,000 spectators. The Colosseo was used for a number of events such as animal hunts, naval battles and gladitorial games. The location of the Colosseo is important because it was built on top of part of Nero's Doma Aurius or the Golden House. The emperor Vespasian decided to build over it to attempt to erase Nero's memory. The Colosseo was free to the public and games were held multiple times a day. The most important thing to me about the Colosseo is that it represented freedom. All people were allowed to come and participate in the spectatorship of the games even slaves. Now, there was a social heirarchy that was evident but still everyone was included. There's a sort of comradarie in being at sporting events, I would imagine that it's similar to how people feel when they are at an NFL game.
