An Adventure Awaits...

Thursday 12th November 2015

At 04:45 we were up and getting ready for our long journey ahead to our next country. I have literally been bitten left, right and center. We ate our cold pizza for breakfast and made our way to the port for our first part of the journey, a boat to Puerto Barrios. It sounds plain sailing, right?
We got on our boat at 05:30, we departed at 06:00, and our transfer on the other side is at 07:00 with a guy called Roberto. Easy!
However, we didn't reach Puerto Barrios until about 07:30 and when looking for Roberto we were told he had already gone. Great! What the hell went wrong? We were then being told that the only way now is by getting a taxi to the border and then a couple of buses to get to where we need to be in time for the ferry. This wasn't the best thing to happen while traveling through Honduras and now just the two of us, not really exactly knowing what we are doing. It all just became a little bit scary, but we can do it.
We got into the taxi and made our one hour journey to the border. We had to get our passports stamped, and as we did, we noticed a shuttle bus parked up behind us. It was only our bloody shuttle that we were meant to be on. How lucky was that? Such a relief.
We carried on traveling with the right shuttle and the right people to the right destination. It turns out me and Paul had managed to get to the right port but on the wrong boat. A much slower boat.
We did the border crossing, filling in some paperwork and paying a small entrance fee, then carried on our way with a quick stop for snacks and a cash machine for some Honduran currency. My card worked in the machine but Paul's didn't. Oops.
Finally a few hours later we arrived at La Ceiba's port. We had one hour and a half before the ferry was due. We took this time to grab some lunch and a drink in a nearby cafe.
16:00 approached and we boarded the ferry, though we didn't depart until half hour later, and nothing could have prepared me for this ride. The worst boat ride i have ever experienced in my whole life. The sea must have been so rough. The boat was going so fast, up and down, and side to side. So much so that i genuinely felt like i was on a roller-coaster. It made my tummy go funny. I put my head down and tried to forget about it. It was a long one hour and a half journey, i was so happy for it to end, my legs had turned to jelly.
We finally got off the ferry arriving in Utila. We were bombarded by people offering us places to stay, all with the first night for free - BONUS! We chose somewhere to stay and followed the lady to the hostel, which was really decent to be fair, just really, really hot with only a couple of fans to keep us cool. For our first night free we were put into an apartment so we had our own room, own bathroom and own kitchen. We got settled in and then headed out for an evening walk. We saw the biggest crab cross the road. I had never seen anything like it. We stopped off at a cash machine and still Paul's card wouldn't work, but neither would mine in this one. Luckily i had that bit of cash from earlier, looks like everything is on me ;-).
We sat down for dinner, i wasn't even that hungry but i ordered a Spaghetti Bolognese anyway, and a frozen lemonade, while Paul opted for a Burrito - a giant one may i add - and a vanilla and peanut butter smoothie. I had a few spoonfuls and i was done, it looked like it hadn't even been touched. I should have given it to the cat that was sat beside us. I asked for it to be boxed up but i then threw it away en route back to the hostel.
We chilled out when we got back. Paul did some of his photo stuff and then went to bed. I followed about an hour later after catching up with this diary. Fan is blasting. It is going to be a hot, hot night ahead.
