Acht weken geleden riep ik tegen iedereen die het wilde horen, ook tegen degene die het niet wilde horen, dat ik voorlopig echt niet meer ging verhuizen...toen wist ik niet dat twee maanden later mijn spullen weer in mijn koffer zouden zitten. New adventure. New City. New Family.

Avonturen zoals deze staan erom bekend dat je uit je comfort zone moet stappen. Het onderbuikgevoel dat ik niet op mijn plek zat in dit gezin werd steeds groter, ondanks dat de band tussen mij en de jongens sterk was. Het was tijd om een knoop door te hakken. Be brave enough to listen to your heart

Conclusie: Rematch, een proces waarbij ik op zoek ben gegaan naar een nieuw gezin om mijn Nieuw-Zeelandse avontuur te vervolgen.

Naast de steun van mensen uit mijn omgeving, zoals begeleiders van playgroups en andere au pairs, kreeg ik ontzettend veel steun vanuit de organisatie. Meerdere managers hielden doordeweeks contact om te kijken hoe het met mij en het rematch proces ging. Na twee weken vol met skype-interviews met diverse gezinnen heb ik weer een match gevonden, in Auckland! Een gezin met twee kinderen, een jongetje van 2.5 en een meisje van 8 mnd! Officieel start ik daar 15 augustus, maar ik mag de week daarvoor al bij hen intrekken. Donderdag was mijn laatste dag bij mijn eerste gezin, dus ik moest een aantal weken gaan overbruggen. Ook dit is gelukt! Ik blijf nu nog een paar dagen in Wellington. Ik heb nog met een paar andere au pairs afgesproken en dan kan ik nog een keertje als toerist de stad zien. Zondag vertrek ik dan voor 10 dagen naar een gezin in de buurt van New Plymouth om in te vallen voor hun eigen au pair. Begin augustus reis ik dan door naar Auckland waar de organisatie mij een aantal dagen onderdak biedt voordat ik kan starten bij mijn nieuwe gezin.

Verder heb ik de afgelopen weken zoveel mogelijk genoten van mijn laatste weken in Wellington. Alle weekenden ben ik met verschillende au pair's naar de must-see's in de omgeving geweest. Naast dat het gezellig is met elkaar, is de au pair community ook wel hecht en iedereen probeert elkaar te helpen. In het laatste weekend dat Chrissy in Wellington was zijn we naar de Weta-cave geweest, een soort museum waar ze alle maskers en attributen voor films als Lord of the Rings en the Hobbit hebben gemaakt. Verder hebben ze hier gewerkt aan films als Kuifje, Avatar en The Chronicles of Narnia. Daarnaast konden we ook nog naar de set van de nieuwe versie van de 'Thunderbirds'. Echt heel tof om de verhalen achter deze producties te horen maar vooral te zien!

Met Vanessa ben ik naar Palmerston North gereden, een plaats twee uur ten noorden van Wellington, om erachter te komen dat je hier niet hoeft te wonen, dus toen hebben we een wandeling gemaakt door een gorge in de buurt.
Met Lea ben ik een middagje Mount Victoria opgelopen, met uitzicht over de baai van Wellington. Afgelopen weekend zijn we naar Eastbourne geweest, een plaatsje in de baai van Wellington waarbij ik als echte Nederlander (maar wel mét helm natuurlijk) naar een vuurtoren aan het einde van de Baai ben gefietst. De dag erna ben ik samen met haar en Laura naar Cape Palliser gereden. Dit is het meest zuidelijke puntje van het Noordereiland dus daar wilde ik nog heel graag heen. Beide dagen hadden we super mooi uitzicht op het zuidereiland. Samen met Maya en Hannah ben ik naar mijn allereerste rugbywedstrijd geweest! De regels ken ik nog lang niet maar ik begreep wel dat 'The Hurricanes', het team van Wellington, won!

Naast alle uitjes ging het 'gewone' leven natuurlijk ook gewoon door. Alle scholen hebben hier nu twee weken schoolvakantie dus alle playgroups waren gesloten. De organisatie had twee uitjes gepland, één in een kunstmuseum (klinkt saaier dan het was) en eentje naar Te Papa, het museum van Nieuw Zeeland. Tevens heb ik mijn creatieve kant eens tevoorschijn gehaald om de zomer weer een beetje in huis te halen en we zijn een ochtend naar 'Junglerama' geweest. De laatste zorgde voor flashbacks aan Smaland, 'we houden de ballenbakballen in de bak'. Zelfs 18500 km verderop denk ik dus echt nog wel aan jullie : ). Ook heb ik mijn eerste aardbeving meegemaakt! Voor de kiwi's was hij niet zo bijzonder: 'alsof er een trein vlak langs je huis raast' maar voor een Nederlands poldermeisjes als ik was het natuurlijk toch wel erg spannend. We kwamen ook nog één dag een paar uur zonder stroom te zitten door een gigantische storm, terwijl er sneeuw (!) viel, maar met dekens en genoeg dikke lagen kleding hebben we ook dat overleefd.

Eight weeks ago, I told everyone who wanted to hear, and also the ones who didnt want to hear, that I would definitly not move my stuff within a short time…not knowing that two months later all my stuff would be back in my suitcase. New adventure. New city. New family.

Adventures like these are know for stepping out of your comfort zone. I had the feeling that this family just wasn’t the one for me, despite the fact that the bond between me and the boys was (usually) really good. It was time to make a decision. BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO YOUR HEART

Conclusion: Rematch, a process to find a new family where I can continu my New Zealand adventures. Not only did I get a lot of support from the people around me, like teachers from playgroups and other au pairs, but the organisation also provided me with a lot of support. Several managers contacted me a few times throughout the weeks to so how I was doing and to catch up about how the rematch process went. After two weeks of skype interviews with numerous families I found a new match, in Auckland! A family with two kids, a boy (2.5yr) and a girl (8mns). The official start date of the job is August 15, but they offered me a place to stay the week before. Thursday was my last day of working with my old family so I had a few weeks to cover. Even that worked out great! For the next couple of days I’m staying in Wellington. I am meeting some other au pairs and I’ll check out the touristy side of Wellington. Sunday I will move up to a family close to New Plymouth to work there for 10 days when their own au pair is away. At the beginning of August I will travel up to Auckland where the organisation provides me with a place to stay for a couple of nights before I can move to my new family.

For the past few weeks I have tried to enjoy my last weeks in Wellington. Every weekend I met up with different au pair’s to see the must-see’s in the area. Besides the fact that it’s fun to hang out with people alike, the au pair community seems to be pretty close and everyone tries to help each other. In the last weekend that Chrissy was still in Wellington we went to the Weta-cave. A museum, sort of, where they made the masks and attributes for films like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Additionally, they worked on movies like TinTin, Avatar and the Chronicles of Narnia. During a tour, they also took us to the filmset of the newest production of the ‘Thunderbirds’. It was awesome to hear the stories behind these productions!

With Vanessa, I drove up to Palmerston North. A city two hours north of Wellington, to discover you really don’t want to live there so we did a hike through a gorge.
Together with Lea I hiked up Mount Victoria on one afternoon, with a stunning view across the bay of Wellington. Last weekend we went to Eastbourne, a small village in the bay. As a real Dutchie (but with helmet) I cycled to a lighthouse at the end of the bay. The day after we went together with Laura to Cape Palliser. This is the southernmost point of the Northern Island so I definitely wanted to go there. Both days we had amazing views on the south island! On Saturday night I spontaneously went to my first rugbygame together with Maya and Hannah. Although I still need to study the rules, I did understand that ‘The Hurrican’s, the team from Wellington, won!

Beside all the little trips, ‘normal’ life still continued. For the past two weeks, it has been school holidays so all the playgroups were closed. The organisation had organised two trips, one to an artmuseum (was way more fun than it sounds) and to Te Papa. Also, I decided to use my creative side to get the summer into the house by making butterflies and we went to ‘Junglerama’. Furthermore I experienced my first earthquake! For the Kiwi’s it wasn’t that special ‘as if a trains passes your house’ but for a Dutch rural girl it is pretty exciting. Additionally, we had a power cut for more than two hours during a massive storm while the snow was falling down. Luckily we had enough blankets and clothes to keep us warm.
