European Holiday June-July 2017

I turned 50 today.

I woke at 7:45 am and read the birthday messages sent from home, which was a nice way to start the day.

We rose and had breakfast at 8:00 am on the roof of the hotel. The view of the mountains was clear and the day bright.

We left Pisa and began our drive to Genoa. We left the region of Tuscany and drive through the region Liguria, of which Genoa is the capital. Genoa is known for its major role in maritime trade over many centuries. Christopher Columbus was from Genoa and he set off to discover the new world in 1492.

Genoa is a major port on the Mediterranean coast. We stopped here and spent 3 hours exploring the city and sampling some of the culinary delights, including pesto, focaccia, and a special kind own pasta. We wandered around the port area and had lunch in an elevated area of the port where we could sit and watch the port and the city skyline.

Genoa is the hometown of Paganini, one of the best violinists who ever lived and a composer of some of the most difficult violin music ever written including his Caprice No 24 which is a challenge for even the most accomplished violinist to play.

We continued our journey at 3:30 pm along the Italian coast towards France. We passed Monaco and then across the border into France. We passed Nice and then arrived at Cannes at about 5:15 pm. We immediately went into the waterfront area of Cannes to explore. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant in Cannes. After dinner, a Brazilian martial arts group put on a show for us in the street and the group required that I participate which is did. It was all part of the fun of turning 50.

After dinner, we bought a gelato to enjoy while sitting on the waterfront. Rob Crawford pulled out his little rockets he bought in Rome and we shot them into the sky. This captured the attention of a little hyperactive 8-year-old boy named Teo who enjoyed taking part in our activities. He kept getting more and more excited and wound up until he looked like he would burst. He kept running around in circles and giving high fives. In the end, we left the rockets with him. His parents were very happy to see their son having fun with us.

We travelled to the hotel by taxi or, in my case, walked the 2.1 kms, to go to bed at 11:00 pm after a big birthday.
