Pompeii is situated right near Mt. Vesuvius and was buried under ash when the volcano errupted in 79 AD. The city has become a very large archeological sight and has given a lot of insight into how ancient peoples lived. The ash preserved a lot of the frescoes and mosaics that are still there today and we can learn something about how they decorated their houses. A lot of the buildings and marble are still in place as well as ancient grafiti that still exists on the exterior walls. I think that the most significant contribution that Pompeii has given us is that precious knowledge of the past.
