Limoux

We only spent a little time in Limoux during August as we had two trips planned; one to meet up with some friends and travel through the Gironde near Bordeaux and the other an organised tour through Finland and Norway. We are 7 months into our 12 month adventure.

The weather continued to be warm and the town was full of visitors with lots of social events. We had a few more shared meals in the courtyard of our apartment which were great fun. Our landlady Helen bought Molly the Staffy over and she checked out each apartment in her role as food quality assurance officer. We continued to explore

the local area and revisited Notre Dame de Marceille just outside Limoux.

At the start of the month we were lucky to attend a local event, the Fricassee de Limoux, with our landlady Helen and some of her friends. The event was held in a car park under the chestnut trees. There were trestle tables set up in long rows, enough to seat several hundred, as well as a stage for Mister John (pronounced Meester Shon) to perform.

It was such a good value and fun evening – a bottle of Blanquette and a litre of red between 6 (further litres 1 euro each), olives and bread snacks, salad with gizzards, followed by the fricassee of pork, dessert, a cheese platter and coffee as well as entertainment all for only 15 euros (about 23 AUD).

Just before our tour we went to Domaine Gayda with Helen and Bob and some of our neigbours from Maison Blanche. Domaine Gayda, is near Brugairolles, about 11 kms from Limoux. It is a vineyard with cellar door tastings and a restaurant. We tasted about 20 wines which, even we thought excessive although we bought many bottles of wine to take home. After that we had a beautiful degustation lunch in the restaurant – the view was superb and you could see over much of the rolling countryside.

Helen managed to get her very noisy guests back to the apartment safely.
