Rome: More Than Just Old Stuff

The Arch of Titus was one of the most interesting symbols of victory I have seen in Rome. These arches were meant to be passed under when a victory was won, but it is the frieze on the inside arch that captured my interest the most. Emperor Domitian built the arch in honor of Titus who battled the Jews in Jerusalem (this gives the arch a personal significance because it was built for a brother). The Romans destroyed the temple of Solomon and took spoils back to Rome with them. The side frieze depicts the menorah and other spoils from the temple being taken back to Rome. One reason I love this arch is because it ties into the Jewish culture and into the Roman culture. It depicts the defeat of the Jews that I have read about in my own study of the Bible, but it also reflects the Romans' idea of conquest and victory. Two cultures are preserved within the arch, which I find fascinating. It adds many layers of complexity to the monument. The arch also played a political role in that it is commemorating the Roman emperor Titus and his victory in battle.
