The past of the Romans was intricate and complex. Not only was their architecture and artwork complex in that it mixed Greek culture with their own, but their religion was also influenced by the Greeks. On the other side of the coin, Christians were also influenced by Roman culture and tradition. This can be seen in burial sites and catacombs. Political and theological aspects of the Roman people's lives also intertwined in an interesting way, such as Caesar Augustus using propaganda that promoted him as a pontiff and a political figure. The different aspects of chastity and rape and conquest were large parts of the Roman culture. They are vastly different, but both were present. For example, the Vestal Virgins represented chastity, but conquering and taking new land was still a huge part of the Roman Empire. Famous Roman figures in the Renaissance also used art to display Greek and Roman myth in addition to Christian stories. This mix of theological and religious art, such as in the Sistine Chapel, show the complexity of both cultures. Some parts of their lives almost seemed contradictory. However, our lives today have parts that seemed contradictory too.
