In my short time in Rome, I have noticed how complex the Roman people are. Just as new buildings are layered on top of older buildings, the Roman people also had many layers in their lives. Through this journal, I hope to capture the complexity of the Romans through their art, mindset, history, and leaders. The mix of different aspects in their lives, such as political and spiritual elements, also give the Roman people a complex yet relatable edge. It is also captivating to see Roman tradition playing into Christian tradition and seeing the transition into the predominantly Christian culture we see today. Even into the times of the Renaissance, ancient Roman culture (stemming from the Greek myths and culture) could be seen in art and education. In many ways, they relate to us today. Very different parts of life such as law and spirituality converge and diverge to add to the complexity of the Romans. Some parts may even seem to contradict each other. This complexity can be seen in today's culture too. Finding balance and order and the correct way to go about our fears and issues is still a central concern in our lives as it was in theirs.
