Day 79, Sunday 12-July-2015
WYNDHAM to CAROLINE POOLS (Halls Creek) 384 K
Leaving Wyndham today and heading for just out of Halls Creek, called in to see the China Wall a rock formation that looks like a mini Great Wall of China and runs for many kilometres, from there we moved on to set up camp at Caroline Pools unhooked the vans and travelled out to the Old Halls Creek township ruins (16klms from Halls Creek) the old buildings are gone now with only a cairn to mark the location of the old buildings, unfortunately the plaques identifying
each cairns building have been stolen. Part of the old mud brick post office still remains and this has been fenced off and a shelter built over it to stop any further damage. We kept following the road to Palm Springs and Sawtooth Gorge then returned to Caroline Pools our overnight stay.
Day 80, Monday 13-July-2015
CAROLINE POOLS to FITZROY CROSSING 305K (10,316K)
We stopped in at Halls Creek to refuel and the continued on to our overnight stay at the Fitzroy Crossing Caravan Park, a very busy caravan park. In the afternoon we went out to Gieke Gorge and did a boat cruise up the Gorge, the Gorge has been carved out of the rock by flood waters during the wet season and looks very impressive, we also saw a few Freshwater Crocs basking on the rocky ledges along the Gorge. A spectacular finish to the cruise when the cruise barge crashed into the dock and then reversed into a low hanging tree trying to make a second attempt, the boat was full of leaves and
branches, fortunately it only took hats off not heads.
Day 81, Tuesday 14-July-2015
A quiet day in camp, we went out in the afternoon to see the Old Fitzroy Crossing town ruins but could not find anything, continued on to the information centre where they had a large selection of souvenirs then back to camp for a cold beer and fish & Chips at the Caravan Park bar.
Day 82, Wednesday 15-July-2015
FITZROY CROSSING to BROOME 376 K
We travelled down to the Gateway Caravan Park about 20k out of Broome which was our base for the next couple of days. Betty the hair dresser was camped here so Pam went over for a Hair Do, Betty is the wife of country singer Alex Beckett and Alex put on a show which we went to see at the camp kitchen that night.
Day 83, Thursday16-July-2015
An early start today so that we could get into Novus in Broome to get
our cracked windscreen replaced, Novus is in the industrial area and Mick the manager run us into the shops so that we could kill 3 hours. We were able to get my mobile phone sorted out and then went for a browse along the shopping strip at Chinatown and lunch at the Shady Lane Café before heading back to pick up the car and return to the Gateway Caravan Park. The caravan park put on a sausage sizzle fundraiser in the evening which we went to for dinner.
Day 84, Friday 17-July-2015
We went back into Broome today for some more sightseeing including Gontheaume Point where the Lighthouse and Dinosaur footprints are, you can only see the footprints when the tide is below 2 metres which did not coincide with our visit today, from there we went around to Cable Beach, we drove onto the beach and set up our table and chairs for happy hour while we watched the tourists on the camel ride and the sunset, moving on we went to Bluey’s Fish
and Chip shop for dinner a very busy place and then back to the caravan park.
Day 85, Saturday 18-July-2015
A quiet day in camp to catch up on the washing and some reading.
Day 86 to 92, Sunday to Saturday 19 to 25-July-2015
BROOME to BARN HILL STATION 120K (11,060K)
Next stop was Barn Hill Station a working cattle station with camping just a short walk to the beach, the park was just about full to capacity when we got there and on Sunday night they did a 3 course roast dinner and had a local Aboriginal rock band, there would have been over a hundred people there, I think most of the camp must have turned out for it and at $17 per head it was good value.
Barn Hill also has a lawn bowls rink, a few lumps, bumps and weeds but plenty of people out there to play bowls. On Monday there was quite a few of the campers moved on and we also tried the home made vanilla slices, mmmmmm yummy, they also do home baked bread, pies and sausage rolls.
Fishing was also on our agenda while we were here and we made as serious effort to catch something, unfortunately nothing, while the guy down the beach from us was pulling in a couple of Mackerel every day. A great beach, very scenic and a great stay.
Day 93 to 97, Sunday to Thursday 26 to 30 -July-2015
BARN HILL STATION to CAPE KERAUDREN RESERVE 359K (11,585K)
On the way to Cape Keraudren, still on the Great Northern highway, we stopped half way at the Sandfire Road house for morning tea and to refuel, we just made it before another dozen vans pulled up to queue for fuel, then just before the turn off to Cape Keraudren we called into the Pardoo road house to get some bait. Our camp was right next to the beach, the ocean was a beautiful aquamarine blue and once again we made a serious attempt to catch some fish, nothing on the first couple of days then we got some Whiting and some Bream so we extended out stay for another 2 days with no further success. We had a couple of good campfires, the only down side was the midgee bites even though we all made sure we kept plenty of insect repellent on.
