Chapter 13

Tom made the decision for us to stay in as many Day's Inns as possible, because we accumulate points, and eventually we should get a free night or nights. Day's Inn was the chain with the most motels in places we are staying. However, we have discovered that there is a lot of variation in Day's Inns. And now, we have a new contender for worst motel of the trip! The Ann Arbor Day's Inn was dirty, the shower was moldy, they only gave us 2 towels, the mattresses were enclosed in plastic bags, our bed had no blankets, just a thin bedspread (and when Tom asked for a blanket they said they didn't have any), the walls were damaged, etc etc. Also they did

not really provide breakfast, contrary to advertising. The WiFi was good though!

All that meant we went out to breakfast, which was good because we had a great breakfast, complete with homemade bran muffins. My "fruit and yogurt" came with frozen yogurt! And the tea was both hot and organic.

We spent all day today at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. It has two parts. In the morning, we did the inside part, which has a huge collection. Some highlights include: a large collection of cars (which Nora and I skipped, we've seen enough cars). Presidential vehicles, including the limousine JFK was riding in when he was killed. A lot of airplanes and trains (skip!). "With liberty and justice for all", which includes a Declaration of Independence, an actual Stamp Act, a camp bed and trunk that George Washington used, the actual chair Lincoln was sitting at Ford's Theater. The actual bus Rosa Parks sat down in -- with photos of her coming to the museum to see the bus! A history of furniture, including a desk that belonged to Mark Twain and some Lincoln furniture. A Weinermobile. And so much more.

After lunch, we went to the outside part, Greenfield Village. Henry Ford moved many buildings, and had many recreated there, and arranged it like an actual town. There are 87 different buildings! Some highlights include: Henry Ford's childhood home (exactly furnished as it was). Logan County Courthouse, where Lincoln practiced law. The Wright Brothers' Cycle Shop, with a plane they built. Thomas Edison's workshop. A plantation house and slave quarters. Noah Webster's house. Robert Frost's house. Luther Burbank's birthplace. George Washington Carver's house. And more!

We stayed until the museum closed at 5:00, and then had dinner in Dearborn. Dearborn has a high percentage of people of Arab descent, as well as a high number, so we were sure we wanted Middle Eastern food. We had a delicious dinner.

After dinner, we drove to Port Huron, our last stop in the U.S.
