For years we have been dreaming of one day having the opportunity to live and work overseas for an extended period of time. After Covid and the prolonged restrictions to travel over several years, 2023 seemed like the right time to safely spread our wings and take off for a while. Our plan was to travel to countries that we haven't visited before, particularly in Europe, and as our good friend Peter Olliver said, our itinerary is taking us to the outer extent of the Roman Empire!
We are so fortunate to have flexible working conditions and able to work from anywhere in the world. We were 'digital nomads', mixing up work and sightseeing in a relaxed fashion, staying for up to two weeks at a time in some locations and using these as a base for exploring locally.
Every day we counted our blessings for this amazing opportunity which we did not take for granted.

We left home on Monday 17 April and flew to Wellington to have a couple of lovely days seeing all the family before our departure except, sadly, Esther who was away tramping at the time. We departed
Wellington early on Thursday 20 April and flew via Christchurch to Singapore on a daytime flight. It was good to have an overnight stay there before flying on to Frankfurt.
Ian Walker, who coincidentally happened to be there at the time, met us at Frankfurt Airport and guided us onto the train, into the city, and to our hotel through a decidedly shady part of town. We were very grateful for this though, as we have all experienced the disorientation of having to negotiate these things when tired from long international flights.
Over a couple of weekend days we all explored the city briefly and started the process of overcoming jetlag.
