Rome Artifacts

Although Michelangelo has the most famous rendition of David, Bernini's David takes the ribbon for me. Something about the emotion he encapsulates is so lifelike and brings a piece of stone to life in ways that I just didn't see in many statues. In contrast with the stone-faced David simply standing, Bernini captured the action of David taking on his biggest feat yet, the giant goliath. He is biting his lips and his brows are turned in, forming a focused and intense face that David would have had in the moment. A glimpse of fear is in his eyes as he throws his entire body back, preparing to sling the stone at the giant. You can see the individual furs on the animal skin pouch he had wrapped around his shoulder and the individual strands in the sling itself. The Roman armour offered to him lays at his feet as he refuses to wear it, for he is protected by God himself and no worldly protection could aid him in this moment. Every muscle is perfectly formed and flexed where in use, as the entire statue becomes a glimpse into the past and no longer block of marble.
