Red Bluff, California
After months of preparation, planning and anticipation, we were actually ready to leave a day early. Given the tremendous heat wave in California we decided to see if we could get on the road early and avoid at least 1 day of triple digit temperatures. Well the plan fell into place. We found a National Forest Service Camp with full hook ups (no way we were going without power for the air conditioner) in
Red Bluff. The Campsite was right on the Sacramento River with a boat launch, interpretive center and hiking trails. We enjoyed our stop over, despite the heat and the pull through site allowed us to get on the road early the next morning.
It wasn’t long before the scenery started to change. Any of you who have been to the far northern reaches of California know what it is like to come around the corner and have beautiful snow capped mountains in the distance. Well, due to the heavy snowfall this past winter, these mountains are more snow capped than ever. Mount Lassen and the surrounding peaks, and of course the very majestic Mount Shasta looming up in solitude, were all breath taking. It was a relatively easy drive with a few winding roads but all in all a relaxing trek to our next destination. I even drove for almost 2 hours. Other than around the block it was the first time that I had pulled the 5th wheel. Our awesome Ford Truck (sorry Chevy owners) made it easy. Other than being extra diligent to make sure that I had our 8 foot wide trailer between the lines behind me, I hardly even knew it was there.
When we arrived at Agency Lake Resort, our campground for the next 4 night we noticed 2 things immediately. 1) The location is incredible with towering weeping willows, 750 feet of lake front and a huge variety of birds constantly on the move. 2) The term “Resort" should be used loosely. The people here are really nice and we have the perfect full hook up site 25 feet from the water’s edge, however, usually the term Resort indicates other amenities of which there are none. There is a rickety dock to fish from and that is about it. That being said, sitting by the lake with a cold drink in hand and a fishing line in the water is entertainment enough for us. Good Night All!!! More adventures await.
