Europe Trip 2016

Today was an early 4:30am start where I got up, packed up and then had to say goodbye to Clare which was sad because it’s been fun travelling together although we were both super excited to get to our next destinations!

After getting to the airport at 6am I managed to get through to my gate with a cookies and cream coffee Frappuccino (probably not the healthiest breakfast I’ve ever had but certainly good!) and boarded my teeny tiny plane (3 seats wide) with only 15-20 people. The flight time was really quick and we’d landed 40 minutes after we’d taken off. When I made my way to the hostel I checked in and then went and joined up with a free walking tour.

The walking tour was really interesting despite the fact it rained on and off the whole time and I’d decided to change into sandals and leave my jacket at home. On the walking tour we learnt about Estonian history, particularly Estonian occupation. We saw many churches including a Russian inspired church which was built on the highest hill during Soviet Rule. We also saw the parliament building and learnt about the president of the country who has no power and is just a symbol. Around the city there are also remnants of the old city wall and wall towers. The streets and buildings of Tallinn are so pretty and it was so nice to walk around and look over at the whole city.

When the tour came to an end I headed back to the hostel for lunch before walking back to town. The hostel was in the most amazing location- right on the boarder of new and old town and easy walking distance to both.

After to lunch I went and found the marzipan room where they have someone performing the traditional craft of marzipan painting. Then I headed over to the Church of the Holy Spirit which had an amazing golden altar and beautiful stain glass windows.

Later, I took a walk around the cobblestone streets which look like the medieval era including people in traditional dress selling goods from wooden carts. I also spent a bit of time looking in souvenir shops and walking through some flower markets near the remains of the old city wall.

Back at the hostel I had a relaxing night catching up on some emails, planning out my uni semester and chatting to people in the hostel common area.
