Today was a great day. Besides being Tim’s birthday, we both agreed that the area that we explored today was our favorite. The area is called Canyon. They call it the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The views were outstanding.
We started out at an area called Artist’s Point with a long range view of the canyon and waterfall. The only negative was a bus load of Japanese tourists all very excited about getting the perfect picture. When you travel that far you want to be sure that you get what you came for.
We took two hikes that would be called moderate. Both switched-back and forth down to viewing areas of the upper and lower waterfalls on the Yellowstone River. Going down was easy but coming back up was another story, especially for Pat. The effort was worth it.
The morning and early afternoon was spent taking hikes and checking out the canyon from other observation points.
We then headed to the Roosevelt Lodge for a late lunch. It is a log cabin lodge with cabins. Big front porch with rocking chairs with views of the mountains. It was President Teddy Roosevelt favorite area to vacation thus named after him. We both had burgers, Tim bison and Pat beef. Both very good.
From there we headed for a scenic drive along the Lamar Valley. The views were expansive with mountains, valleys, rivers and meadows. Here we encounter long-distance views of hundreds of bison. However, we were fortunate enough to have a few of them cross in front of us and walk by us. They really are beautiful creatures. Interestingly, we were told (by a ranger and we had no way to fact check this since we have no internet) that they can run 35 miles per hour and can reach that speed in a few strides. They can also jump over a man’s head with a standing start. Looking at them it seems impossible.
Yesterday while Pat stood in line for the Post Office, a young woman who works for the park during the summer said that a few weeks ago she was driving at night and didn’t see a bison and hit it. It got up and rammed her car and walked away. She had a picture of the car and the car lost!

On our return we went to another area called Tower-Rooservelt. There we had another short walk to a waterfall. There were some really unique rock formations in this area.
Before going back to the Airstream, we stopped at the local market and treated ourselves to ice cream to celebrate Tim’s birthday!
