Carol's info on the house/area:
Our house is the only structure on 25 acres of waterfront land. We also own an (uninhabited) island that is just off shore. While our house is not directly on the water (we are on top of a hill with a stunning view of the bay) there is a path (which is somewhat overgrown) from the house leading to the shore. Great for exploring!
When you are at the house, on the deck overlooking the bay, you may feel as though there isn’t another soul within 100 miles. Yet the house is only 3 miles from the town of Deer Isle and 6 miles from the (slightly larger) town of Stonington. We are across the bay from Acadia National Park, although to get there you need to drive inland and up the coast, so the park is usually a day trip away. There are several grocery stores on Deer Isle, as well as some great restaurants. There is also plenty to do and explore, from hiking to sea kayaking to taking boat tours of the area.
There is no address, just exactly 3 miles on the right when you turn on Sunshine Road (a.k.a. Mountainville Road) off of Route 15. We are the first “road” after Nervous Nellies on the right (Nervous Nellies is on the left, and you go up a hill and we are on the right). There is a street sign that says “Margot Lane”. I have attached directions that will hopefully help.
Margot Lane is an overgrown path in the woods. I recommend arriving in day light if you are able. You may not see Nervous Nellies if you arrive after dark.
DIRECTIONS TO THE NEUGEBAUER HOUSE
DEER ISLE, MAINE
FROM BUCKSPORT
· Take Route 1 north/Route 15 south/Route 3 east for 4-5 miles until you see a sign for “15 south” towards Blue Hill. Veer Right off of Route 1 onto Route 15 south (at a gas station); stay on Route 15 south for about 13 miles until you come to Blue Hill.
· In Blue Hill, Route 15 south will dead end on to Route 176. Turn Right on to Route 176, and you will begin to see signs towards Deer Isle and Stonington. Follow those signs.
· Stay on Route 176 for about 1 mile, and you will reach a “circle,” where route 176 meets Route 172 meets Route 15. Stay straight at the “circle” and you will find yourself now on Route 15 (still following the signs to Deer Isle/Stonington).
· After the circle, stay on Route 15 for about 4 miles until the road dead-ends onto Rote 15. Turn left (south) onto Route 15 (still following the signs to Deer Isle/Stonington).
· Go approx. 6 miles until the road dead-ends again. This time turn Right onto Route 15 South.
· Route 15 south will carry you over the big bridge on to Little Deer Isle, and then over the causeway on to Deer Isle proper. Stay on Route 15 south for about 13 miles beyond the big bridge until you get to the “town” of Deer Isle. Stay on Route 15 south for another mile or so until you get to “Sunshine Road” (also known as Moutainville Road)
· Sunshine Road, also known as Mountainville Road is on your left; it dead-ends onto Route 15. On the right (as you are heading south on Route 15) is a gas station (the name of the gas station tends to change frequently).
