Having reached the northwest coast of the south island on the afternoon of the 1st of March and already in possession of a preset date --- the 6th --- to ferry over to the north island, we had but four and a half days to cover the whole of the northern third of the south island. Nowhere near enough, and even more so since we both happened to have got a nifty case of the common cold and chose to rest a bit more than our usual.

The north of the south island, New Zealand, 1-6 March 2018
Having reached the northwest coast of the south island on the afternoon of the 1st of March and already in possession of a preset date --- the 6th --- to ferry over to the north island, we had but four and a half days to cover the whole of the northern third of the south island. Nowhere near enough, and even more so since we both happened to have got a nifty case of the common cold and chose to rest a bit more than our usual.
Still, we saw what we saw --- bizarre layered rock formations at Pancake Rocks, a sea lion colony at Cape Foulwind, dense secondary forests and gigantic limestone arches at Oparara Basin, New Zealand's longest (and possibly narrowest and flimsiest) swingbridge at Buller Gorge Swingbridge, and beautiful scenery throughout, especially along the Lower Buller Gorge and Queen Charlotte Sound scenic drives --- and the rest will have to wait for a future trip --- or forever.
Onward to the north island.
Accommodations:
- "Utopia Retreat" holiday house, Westport (4 nights; superb)
- Courtney's Airbnb unit at 33 Milton Terrace, Picton (1 night; ok)
