We creatively cooked to empty our trailer of all fresh food and drove across the border into WA. First stop Lake Argyle. We learnt the history about the Durack's establishment of Argyle Downs Station and the subsequent dam that was built and flooded out the area. There was good live music, if you're interested, look up "Kimberley Cassanova" on youtube. We got the classic infinity pool shot, it's a laugh as there was a queue for this.
A quick stop in Kununurra to see our dear friend Denise, the universe often delivers, and we happened to be in the same place at the same time.
Stocked up on food, fuel, and alcohol to last a fortnight we headed onto the Gibb. El Questro Station is the most famous station and is pretty glampy with a restraunt, bar, and even free washing machines. It also gave us a chance to test out
the Colorado's 4WD capabilities on some pretty rugged tracks. This included a 90cm river crossing which was a little intense as its long too, we did have to dry out the car and mats for a few days after this one. The highlight at ELQ was Emma Gorge.
We let the tyres down (25psi for those car people out there) and hit the corrogations. Duh duh duh duh duh....thump...duh duh duh duh would be the routine for the next two weeks. The roads are not great, but the graders have started work on it ready for the cattle trucking season. We broke it up with a few swims, Ellenbrae Station scones, and a Hedley Thomas podcast - 'Shands story'.
We took a flight in a cesna 200 from Drysdale to see the
Prince Regent and Mitchell NPs. Prince Regent NP has no roads in, and the renoteness was incredibly vast. It is awesome to think that there are parts of our country that are still so remote and unspoiled by human activity. We had a ripper free campsite just up the road from Drysdale Station, and you could even swim there. Drysdale Station served up a pretty awesome burger too.
From there we crept west, pretty slowly, but the car and trailer didn't miss a beat. This must be a credit to Nada's handy skills as he was constantly checking and maintaining things in the evenings. Something about 'greasing the nipples' which I have discovered, is actually a thing on some trailers. WD-40 silicon spray was the best thing we packed for the tent zips and press studs as there was so much dust, and the friction made them hard to use at times. We stopped at so many gorges, which are all
still flowing, but our top two were Manning and Bell Gorge. The peak season is winding up, so the crowds were small. The temperatures drop off at night, and we even put on a jumper.
By the end of the trip, we were starting to get a bit "gorged out," but Tunnel Creek was completely different and so cool to explore the little side caves. There is some interesting history in the area and so many fossils and indigenous paintings. Windjana Gorge was the most concentrated area for fresh water crocs and was good viewing.
We are heading to Broome as I type this - straight to the car wash to get rid of some dust. The only casualties were a couple of beer cans, which rubbed a hole through each other in the esky. Maybe Nada needed to drink them quicker. It was worth it, and the Kimberly's is a bloody spectacular part of Australia!!
