1. The one about a crazy idea

It was 2002 when I (Matt) first got a sense of the vast unoccupied expanse of Australia that seemed so foreign to my previous experiences of holidays on the east coast.

That school-organised bus tour across the Nullarbor to the beautiful beachside town of Esperance, WA, was full of amazing experiences. In my excited retelling of them, I made the rather presumptuous promise to Carolyn: "One day I'll take you back there; you have to see it!"

Later in 2018, our family had just returned from a hastily-organised 5 week exploration of the NSW coastline in a recently-purchased camper trailer. "We should do that for longer... much longer!" we promised ourselves.

And so, here we are - it's 2021, and we're finally attempting to make-good on the promises, hopes, and dreams we've held for years. Whether we make it all the way back to Esperance, or circumstances allow us to travel for longer than 6 weeks, we're excited to see where the road takes us.

Like so many things in life, we don't expect it will go entirely to plan, but I guess that's the joy of any investment. Yes, it's somewhat self indulgent, and yes, there are many other ways to spend the money, but what about the time spent together? Who knows what will come from that?

And so, with our complete lack of a plan, let's get going!!
