Chapter 7 - the Greek Isle of Rhodes

Rhodos

We have arrived in the fourth largest island in Greece, Rhodes, and again we missed one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, the Colossus of Rhodes. This time we are about 2000 years too late as the Colossus was only in existence for 54 years before an earthquake took it down.

The walled city of Rhodes is beautiful, although the cobblestones prove challenging.

Beeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz!

As Joe was a beekeeper for a while, we were interested in visiting the only bee museum in Greece!

Greek bees are really large and they can make around 20 kg of honey per hive each season. Did you know that a bee flies around 55,000 miles for each pound of honey!

We got to taste traditional Greek Melekouni. It is especially a Rhodian tradition to serve melekounia at weddings. It’s a sweet cookie made of honey, sesame seeds, almonds, orange, lemon peel and spices.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

Surprise!

In the evening we tried one of the ships premier restaurants, Eden, and had an even more amazing dinner of sea bass, filet mignon and short rib en croute. The sommelier poured a wonderful Italian Barolo and toasted us in chinese: Ching Ching! We told her we were on the cruise celebrating our 50th anniversary.

After dinner the waiter, assistant waiter and sommelier surprised us with a “happy anniversary” cake!
…And a three-tier assortments of sweets!
…And a carrot crème brûlée!
…And a lemon torte!

Their idea of celebrating was lots and lots of sweets!

We went to a late night comedy show to see Ralph Harris, who was hilarious!

At one point he asked the audience about what excursions they went on. We were in about the fifth row, and Joe yelled out “the bee museum!”

This guy couldn’t believe there was even such a thing as a Bee museum much less that people would go to it. He must’ve ripped on that topic (and us!) for five minutes. Our stomachs hurt from all the belly laughs!
