Dear readers,
Today we are driving back to Reykjavík while making some stops along the way. Our first stop was at Borgarvirki. To get to this place you need to drive on a dirt road for about 8 km but it is totally worth it. The scenery is absolutely stunning. It is believed this place used to serve as a defensive fortification. You can walk all along the ridge of
the fortification and see the stunning mountains in the distance. This fortification dates from the early settlement days (870-1030 AD).
Next up we wanted to spot some seals. But, along the way we came to some Icelandic horses which were standing in the middle of the road. We decided to get out of the car to take some pictures and say hi to the horses. They were very sweet, not shy and loved to be stroked. But after about 15 minutes they started to lick our car. First, we thought this was harmless until they also started to "bite" the car. We tried to scare them away but it was too late: they had already caused damage to the car in 5 places. Luckily we insured our car so we didn't have much to worry about but we now know for next time that horses like cars a bit too much ;).
When we finally made it ti the seal beach, we decided to go for a little walk. Immediately we spotted some seal-heads in the water! Yaay! I
took some pictures and wandered along the beach a bit. This is really a calm place, it think it's one of my favorite spots. The only sound you hear are the waves. Also, the view is just stunning at this beach. It is a black sand beach which gives you a view of the snow-covered mountains in the distance. I absolutely loved it.
After checking out the seals, we walked a little further along the beach to a famous rock formation. Many people think it looks like a drinking dragon. Two of my friends also thought it looked like a gorilla, haha. This rock formation is called "Hvítserkur". You should definitely pay a visit here if you're planning a trip up north. There is also a gorgeous hostel which faces the beach. I can definitely
recommend this place!
I even think it is in my top 5 of places to see in Iceland!
Next it was time to drive for a little longer. We drove for 1,5 hours to "Glanni waterfall". I had no idea if this waterfall was going to be worth it as I had just added it to my maps randomly, but it definitely was! Surrounding the waterfall, there is a nice area to walk around and the waterfall has the shape of a horseshoe. It was only a 5 minute walk from the car and there weren't any other tourists, which made it even more enjoyable.
We decided to end our roadtrip the same way we had started it: in a
hot pool. This time we went to a natural hot pot named "Krosslaug". I had never been here before but it was on the way to Reykjavík so we could go there now! It has a really cool location in the middle of nowhere and it looks very "natural" as it has been built with the same stones as the surrounding area. It isn't as clean as the usual hot tubs (muddy), but it was still very enjoyable. Especially as this hot pool is very hot! Above 40 degrees and we even had to take breaks from the heat once in a while.
After taking a dip in the pool, it was time to head back to Reykjavík, which was about an 1,5 hrs drive from here. I want to thank Laura, Barbara, Ella and Jake for making the trip so fun and memorable! You are great company.
Love, Camille
