Throughout this trip, the class has gotten an expansive and relatively thorough view of Rome and its many artifacts, from Rome’s humble beginnings to the culture today. A few particular artifacts stuck out in my mind as I was trying to make sense of Rome’s story as a whole, and the following pages contain the buildings and artwork I consider representative of specific periods of time in Rome – the founding, the kings, the republic, the empire, the renaissance, the reunification, and World War II. It was incredible to see these objects and places firsthand, and interesting to reflect on their meaning, both when they were made and what they have meant to Romans and the world throughout time. The Romans have proven themselves inventive, innovative, and consistently transcendent, and it was a joy to experience the culture that has so strongly influenced the world today.
