A "Why" Beyond Our Sight

09.10.2017

As most people know, I am studying a combination business and mathematics here at ORU in a very pragmatic/STEM-based degree plan. However, prior to ORU my education was steeped in the humanities--art, dance, acting, choir, philosophy, ethics, and writing classes, a very intense history curriculum, ect. They were and are the core of who I am, how I think, and what I enjoy. Where STEM fields provide the understanding of the concrete laws and logic of the world around us, the humanities reach out to explore things that are intangible, immeasurable, and bring an understanding of forces that we cannot see or touch. It's the study of the things that make us more than just biological machines, what makes us, well...human. And that understanding is what makes all of the scientific advancement and economic development worth it.
Sorry, back to the topic at hand: why I think humanities will be beneficial to me, in my current degree. Which, incidentally, brings me to the reason I chose my current degree in the first place: no field of study is truly complete without the others. Abstract concepts require logic to make them comprehensible, creativity requires structure to be implemented. Innovation lies idle without communication, and advancement is often only spurred on by inspiration. If I have a degree in business but not the understanding of the people among whom business operates I will not be effective. Perspective to understand others is invaluable, and learning the history and culture of another country is one of the best exercises I can think of to develop it. Lastly, I believe that humanities give us a better understanding of ourselves. Recognizing the patterns in culture and history allow us to see basic trends in human nature, and recognizing differences allows us to better examine and develop our own personal culture. In short, the humanities allow us to gain perspective and not only better understand the world around us, but ourselves.
