My Capstone Vacation

Description of people: Australians are generally laid-back, open and direct. They say what they mean and are generally more individual and outgoing than many others. Some key values that reflect the Australian way of life include freedom of speech, freedom of religion, democracy, equality regardless of sex, marital status, religion, nationality, disability or sexual preference, peacefulness, an equal opportunity for all and support for the underdog. In most practical ways, Australia is an egalitarian society because there is no segregation between people of different incomes or backgrounds and everyone is free to live where they like, attend university and follow whichever religion and occupation they choose.

Geography: Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. Australia is an island, surrounded by water. It is located on the smallest continent in the world. Australia has a very dramatic landscape. Australia also has some mountainous areas and plateaus scattered throughout the country. The Blue Mountains, on the south-eastern end of Australia, get their name from the blue haze caused by oil droplets given off from the eucalyptus trees. As an island, Australia also has many beautiful coastal beaches. Over 70% of Australians now live in cities or towns. Most of this population lives in the eastern and southern coasts, and around Perth in the west.

Current Issues: One issue in Australia is the mistreatment of Aboriginals. Aboriginal Australians are much more likely to be arrested for trivial things, and have a higher mortality rate.
